Misogyny in video gaming and wider geek culture is an issue that’s currently gaining a lot of attention. And so it should as there is a widespread generalisation that males dominate the community in both number and skill, even though 47% of gamers identify as female (Video Game: The Movie 2013). Because of this, and being a female game enthusiast myself, I was excited to see Tits or GTFO as it promised to shed light on the issue.

The show has heart, and is set appropriately in the cozy nerdgasm that is Mana Bar. The text has all of the ingredients to create a personalised and engaging performance. Although at times the anecdotes told seemed to have no relevance to misogyny or gender issues. Additionally it’s confusing as to whether the piece is verbatim and whether the stories come from one person or multiple.

Unfortunately I was ultimately disappointed by the show’s lack of in depth exploration, and a performance which lacked energy and drive.

The show means well. Creators Kaitlyn Plyley and Rebecca Cheers are obviously close to the issue, and the content of the writing in terms of dialogue and story telling, is actually quite good. Unfortunately this is accompanied with an unpolished performance, by an actor (Ell Ackerman) whose lines had to be prompted more than a handful of times during the show. Tits or GTFO would’ve benefitted from stronger characterisation, and a higher energy performance, which may eventuate as the season progresses.

Regardless, Tits or GTFO is ultimately let down by an un-engaging performance, lacking warmth and human connection to the issue at hand.
