Anywhere Theatre Festival, the festival of performance anywhere but a theatre is coming to Wollongong from 17 to 27 August 2017 thanks to major partners Wollongong City Council, Destination Wollongong and Wollongong Central.

Anywhere Theatre Festival Wollongong will be a festival of performance anywhere but a theatre that explore the local nooks and crannies with performance. Drama in a lighthouse, dance in a swimming pool, cabaret in a cafe, puppetry in a hotel, sketch comedy in a fashion store, poetry, music and workshops.

Anything, anywhere for anyone… but a theatre.

If you are a business or person with an interesting space or a performer wanting to get involved, scroll down to hear how it all works.

As with the internationally renowned Brisbane Anywhere Theatre Festival, Wollongong is all about providing a way local and visiting performing artists can take creative risks without the financial risks, so local businesses can introduce new customers to their businesses and audiences can have the experience of their life seeing performance and exploring the nooks and crannies of Wollongong at the same time.

Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor, Cr Gordon Bradbery said Wollongong City Council is excited to host such an innovative Festival.

“We’ll be proud to offer our residents a range of performances in spaces not usually known for artistic pursuits.”

“This Festival will activate spaces that traditionally lay dormant and provide great opportunities for our local businesses and artistic performers. This Festival will further enhance Wollongong City’s reputation as a destination for exciting events,” said the Mayor.

There’s nothing quite like it. But how can you get involved if you’re a local business or performer?

If you are a performer or artist…

Perform anywhere… but a theatre.

All venues are rent free and we work with everyone involved with the festival to ensure you have the best chance of attracting an audience with a program where your event can stand out instead of being lost in a hundred page booklet.

The program works equally well for emerging and established artists with a range of resources and support provided as well as marketing, box office that works anywhere and creative development support.

“This has been our most financially successful festival all year, even after touring our shows nationally!” Tessa Waters, performer at Anywhere Theatre Festival in Brisbane (Also performed at Melbourne Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Lorne Festival).

If you are a business or have an interesting space…

Any kind of business can host a performance: accountants, swimming pools, cafes, small bars, boxing rings, lighthouses, retail outlets, professional services. Anything but a theatre.

There is no cost for businesses to be part. Simply provide your space without charge and we work with you to find a performance that works for your space. Performers are encouraged to use minimal traditional theatre equipment to ensure all impacts on your business are positive.

In the Brisbane Anywhere Theatre Festival, 67% of audience members coming to a show had not visited the space before and stated they were much more likely to revisit that business as a result of their experience. That’s a lot of potential new customers in one hit!

You can also register a workshop connected to your business to be a separate event in the program – jewellery making, tax time, craft, coffee making.

We will be opening up registrations for local and visiting performing artists and local venues very soon.
